At the end of this year comes the long-planned grand ceremony. ---on December 18th, 2009, Shanghai International Studies University will celebrate her 60th anniversary. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and respect to all the leaders, alumni, and friends from home and abroad, who have long been concerning and supporting the development of SISU.
Born together with the P.R.C and advancing with the time, SISU ranks among the top Chinese universities in the ¡°Project 211¡± and is directly under the Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Shanghai. Then named Shanghai Russian College, the school was founded in December, 1949, shortly after the birth of new China. In 1956, it changed the name into Shanghai Foreign Language Institute, and later in 1963 was listed as a national key university under direct supervision from the Ministry of Education. In 1994, it was officially renamed Shanghai International Studies University and was among the first universities and colleges jointly supervised by the National Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Shanghai. And in 1996, the school became one of the nation¡¯s ¡°100 key universities for the 21st century¡± after entering ¡°Project 211¡±. With 60 years¡¯ academic progresses and talents cultivating, the university has gained high reputation in the society and become fairly influential around the globe.
It is our mission to cultivate social elites with lofty character, international vision and a command over domestic and foreign studies. After 60 years¡¯ unremitting cultivation and pioneering exploration, SISU has evolved into a research, teaching, and multidisciplinary comprehensive university, noted in language disciplines. We have been committed to building three core competences in language majors, inter-disciplinary majors and internationalized school management. 60 years¡¯ arduous endeavor---SISU has pursued to develop from a school with single language and discipline teaching to a college teaching multiple languages and disciplines and to an internationalized research and teaching university nowadays. 60 years¡¯ spirit passing and accumulation---with mutual efforts from SISUers of previous generations, SISU has formed a spirit with the motto of ¡°lofty character, international vision; spirit of innovation, capacity of practice¡± as the core. The school is dedicated to cultivating foreign language elites with high quality, multiple skills, international vision, spirit of innovation, and capacity of practice.
Inheriting the past and ushering to the future---the 60th anniversary is a vital milestone in the developing history of SISU. In order to summarize past experiences and promote future development, celebrations will be held in the campus under the principles of being frugal, grand and practical. We have launched all types of preparations for the ceremony, including the school¡¯s cultural relics and materials collecting, international academic conferences, academic forums, anniversary celebration assembly, fund raising and variety show, etc. You are most welcome to concern, support and engage in our preparations. And during the celebration, we heartily welcome the attendance and instructions from leaders from home and abroad and friends from all walks of life with concerns and support for SISU, and we sincerely hope that alumnus at home and abroad would meet in the alma mater to celebrate the event and enjoy the celebrations
